To the north are the Alpine passes Gotthard, San Bernardino and Lukmanier. To the south you can quickly reach Lugano and the border at Chiasso.
The region is ideal for trips to the nearby holiday areas of Locarno and Ascona, across Monte Ceneri to southern Ticino with Lugano at its centre, to the romantic Ticino side valleys, or northwards to Leventina where you find the Bedretto Valley and the sunny Blenio Valley.

Bellinzona’s landscape is characterised by its historic fortress. It consists of three castles, a wall and a rampart that encloses the entire valley. The fortress is the only example of medieval military architecture of this type in Europe and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
